5 Questions to Start Every Conversation Early

Building respectful and inclusive relationships with artists starts with asking the right questions—early and often.

5 Questions to Start Every Conversation Early

So often, access is treated as a last-minute add-on. But by making these questions a regular part of your process, you’re helping to shift that culture—from reactive to proactive.

Here are five questions you can ask every time you work with a new artist. These questions are designed to support clear communication, reduce assumptions, and open up space for artists—especially Deaf and Disabled artists—to share what they need to feel welcomed, respected, and supported.

Top 5 Questions to Start Every Conversation:

  1. What do you want us to know about how to support you best?
Start with openness and invite the artist to share on their own terms.
  2. Do you have any access needs or preferences we should be aware of?
Show you're ready to meet them where they’re at—without assumptions.
  3. Will you need extra time or accommodations during sound check, rehearsal or load in?
Accessibility starts with logistics—build in time to get it right.
  4. Who do you want to be your main point of contact, and how do you prefer to communicate?”
Respect people’s communication styles—email, text, interpreter, etc.
  5. What would make this experience feel good and creatively fulfilling for you?
Don’t just plan for access—plan for joy, safety, and pride too.
